This stay was not planned. Our return flights were cancelled, the rebooking pushed us an extra day, and rather than absorb the delay in the city, I used the time to visit a property I had been meaning to see. Four Seasons Hampshire was the answer, and it turned out to be the right one.
For reference: this was the final stop on a London trip that also included Four Seasons Park Lane, Claridge’s, and Rosewood Chancery.
Why Hampshire at the End of a London Trip
The property sits 30 to 45 minutes from Heathrow, depending on time of day. Counterintuitively, getting from central London to Hampshire took less time than the initial drive from Heathrow into the city had.
We took the house car from the Chancery to Waterloo, trained to Fleet, and got an Uber to the hotel. The total travel time was straightforward, and the train offered Wi-Fi. For anyone ending a London trip before a Heathrow departure, this is genuinely one of the smoother decompression options available. The logistics of getting here should not be a deterrent.
The Property
Four Seasons Hampshire is a restored 18th-century Georgian manor on 500 acres. The red brick exterior and grand scale of the building have been maintained since the brand took over in 2005. The interior shows its age in places, and at this property that reads as intentional rather than neglected. The character is the point.
What the building cannot claim, the grounds more than compensate for. Rolling hills, working pastures, horse stables, a canal, and miles of trails make up a property that is genuinely difficult to stay indoors on, even in 1°C January weather. We did a four-mile walk along the canal and through the grounds, and it was one of the better things we did in England on the entire trip.
This is where the property earns its recommendation. Not the rooms, not the food program, which I will address honestly below. The grounds and the activity infrastructure are what justify a dedicated stop here.
The Rooms
Classic British country house in full expression. If a contemporary aesthetic is even a secondary consideration, this is not the right property. The traditional decor, including patterned carpets, heavy draping, and architectural molding, is committed and consistent. It is not apologetic about what it is, and it should not be. It is exactly the right aesthetic for what this property represents.
What you do get within that traditional envelope is Four Seasons soft product: the bed, the linens, the pillow menu, the bath experience. The standard the brand delivers at the room level holds regardless of the design context.
We stayed in the Park Suite, an upgrade from a Heritage Deluxe Room, with views over the gardens, a generous closet, and a second half bath. One practical note: our room required navigating a short flight of stairs from the main corridor. If accessibility or mobility is relevant, confirm the specific room location when booking.
For families: connecting room configurations, pull-out sofa options, and two-bedroom layouts are available. The property is designed with multi-generational and family travel in mind throughout.
Service
Four Seasons service is predictable in the best sense. The standard does not vary by property, and Hampshire delivered exactly what the brand promises. Our preferences and pillow choices were already noted before we arrived. Leadership greeted us at arrival. Our bags were in the room before we were. Every member of staff we encountered operated with warmth and precision.
One detail worth highlighting: it was just above freezing when we went out for our walk, and the front desk team fitted us in wellies before we left. When we returned, our own shoes had been warmed and set out waiting for us. Take them up on the wellies. It is worth it and your shoes will thank you.
Food and Beverage
We had one night here and used much of our dining time at a local pub we found along the canal walk, so my coverage of the F&B program is limited and I want to be honest about that.
The afternoon tea service is worth noting. We were coming directly from Claridge’s, which sets an objectively high comparison point. The Four Seasons Hampshire version was a strong execution. As someone who is gluten-free, I am typically cautious about tea service because the format is not kind to that restriction. Every course was fully accommodated here without any reduction in what was offered. That is worth noting for guests with similar dietary needs.
If you are traveling with children, request to see the children’s tea service. The setup our neighboring table received, with cupcakes and an adapted spread, was genuinely well done and worth planning into the afternoon.
The Farmhouse restaurant and the full dining program deserve more time than a one-night stay allows. If you can stay two nights and plan the meals in advance, the property’s F&B has a much fuller story to tell.
Activities and Amenities
This is where the property operates at a level well above what the room product alone would suggest.
The activity offering covers a range that few resort properties in the UK match:
Sharkie’s Reef is the indoor family pool complex, with waterslides, splash pads, and rotating fountains. For families traveling with children, this facility alone changes the calculus on whether to extend a London trip by a night or two. There is also a separate indoor lap pool and a full spa.
Beyond the pool complex, the property runs target sports across six disciplines: laser clay, air rifles, archery, axe throwing, clay pigeon, and crossbow. Hawk and owl encounters, carriage rides, horseback riding from the on-site stables, croquet, tennis, fishing, canal picnics, and a small barn petting zoo round out a calendar that covers every age and interest level in a family group.
For guests who want to engage with the grounds more directly, the walking trails are the best version of this. We covered four miles along the canal in near-freezing weather and did not want to stop. The landscape earns it.
Who This Property Is For
Families with children who need range and activity options. Active couples who want the countryside without sacrificing Four Seasons service or soft product. Travelers ending a London trip who want a clean, logistically simple transition to Heathrow.
This is not the right answer for guests who prioritize contemporary design, a concentrated urban dining program, or a resort experience built around nightlife and social energy. For those guests, the London properties serve better.
As a final night after several days in the city, it is hard to improve on. The pace shift is immediate and the grounds do what no London property can replicate.
