Review: An Art-Filled Adults’ Retreat Near St Tropez

I stayed at COMO Le Beauvallon in the days before it opened to guests on April 24th, one of a small number of advisors on property while the finishing touches went in. By the time I arrived, everything was set and ready for guests. This COMO Le Beauvallon review is the honest version: who this hotel is right for, who should book elsewhere, and the details you cannot get from the property’s own page.

The short answer first. This is a modern art collector’s hotel built for couples who want privacy, glamour, and boat access to one of the most famous marinas in the world. It is not a hotel for children. Once you accept what it is, it is one of the most distinctive openings on the French Riviera this year.

Who COMO Le Beauvallon Is For

The hotel is full of art, and a lot of it. There is so much that COMO built an app to help guests understand the pieces. The collection runs to roughly 300 works (estimated), and the owner removed about 125 before opening. That tells you everything about the priority here.

It also tells you who should not book. Everywhere you turn there are fragile statues worth well into six figures. I was careful at every step not to brush against anything. I would not bring children here, and I say that plainly so no family arrives expecting a relaxed environment. The art, the open suites, and the adult atmosphere all point the same direction.

For the right traveler, that focus is the appeal. If you are a modern art lover looking for a romantic, private getaway with your partner, and you want fast boat access to an iconic destination, this is your property. St Tropez is about glamour, and COMO Le Beauvallon matches its setting with conviction.

The Location Question, Answered

Location is the first thing people ask about, and it was my own concern before arrival. The hotel sits back in Grimaud, within walking distance of a golf course and a small village, about a 20 to 25 minute drive into the center of St Tropez with no traffic. On a map, it looks removed from the action.

In practice, it is not. We boarded the COMO boat and pulled into the center of the main marina in eight minutes. It was faster and more enjoyable than the drive, and it reframes the entire location concern. The boat is weather dependent, but that is rarely an issue outside the shoulder seasons, and in shoulder season the roads are clear enough that the drive is quick anyway. The one time the weather kept us off the water in late April, we drove to Club 55 with no trouble. In peak summer, when the roads clog, the boat is the answer.

The History Behind the Property

The building was originally constructed in 1914 as a 100-room hotel serving the nearby golf course. From its early days it drew artists and high-profile guests who valued its privacy, and during both world wars it served as a military hospital.

In 2008 it became a private event space, and for the better part of a decade it hosted exclusive events. There was a brief moment when another major operator looked at the property before COMO secured it. COMO then spent roughly five years reflagging and rebuilding it into what stands today: a 42-room hotel, mostly suites, down from the original 100 rooms. That lower density is part of what makes the stay feel private.

The Rooms and Suites

The art does not stop in the lobby and hallways. It carries through the suites as well.

There are only a handful of standard rooms, and they all face the hillside. No suites face the hillside, only the sea. I would skip the room category entirely and book a suite, unless you are traveling with older children or have staff or security who need a room of their own.

The suite product is where this property gets interesting. There are two main types, the Junior Suites and the Beauvallon Suites, plus the specialty COMO Suite. Most of the inventory is Beauvallon Suites, which make up the middle of the building. The Junior Suites are all corner rooms.

The Junior Suites have a soft, modern feel, with windows facing the sea and the sides of the building. If you prefer a more traditional, reserved layout, this is the room type for you. They are well appointed, and the corner position gives them a strong layout.

The Beauvallon Suite is for travelers who want something bolder, and it is not for everyone. It is one large open room with floor-to-ceiling windows, and the bathroom is fully exposed within the space. The shower is large and sits right beside the bed, and the glass does not frost. The bathtub is clear glass, positioned in the center of the suite. The toilet sits just inside the entrance, on the opposite side from the rest of the bathroom. Every toilet in the building is a Toto, and when you first enter with your key, the lid lifts automatically. I flag all of this so it is a choice and not a surprise. Many guests will love the openness. I think of the Beauvallon Suite as a true honeymoon suite, built for a couple’s escape to St Tropez.

The COMO Suite carries the same open, glass-walled character with art throughout, but the bathroom is a proper, very large room, and the views are among the best on the property.

The One Real Limitation

I want to be direct about the main building, because it has a real gap. As of now there is no bar in the main building. To reach a proper bar you go down to the beach club, a five to seven minute walk through the gardens, with limited hours, or you order from your server at a table in the restaurant. There is a bar on the main patio, but it opens only in good weather and was closed throughout my stay.

For a hotel drawing an adult, couples-focused crowd, that is a miss. There are several coves and seating areas where a bar would sit perfectly, and I understand there are plans to add one. I would expect it by next season.

Food and Beverage

The food is very good across the board. There is one main restaurant plus the beach club, with plans for a lobby bar and a fine dining concept aimed at a Michelin star in future seasons.

The food and beverage program is led by chef Yannick Alléno, who was on property for the opening. The beach club menu is strong and will be the standout until the fine dining room is running. Breakfast was excellent, with a full menu and a generous buffet.

The Beach Club and Amenities

The beach club is the highlight. The team executed it well and the atmosphere is right. Summer DJ sets on the patio will be a draw. There is a boat dock at the entrance, and I expect many outside guests will arrive by water. The rooftop is a strong addition.

The gym is small but well equipped, with some unusual pieces that suit the hotel’s character. The spa has two treatment rooms offering massages and facials. The property is walkable to Le Beauvallon Golf Club, which is otherwise closed to the public and open to guests with a booking, a genuine perk. I played nine holes early in the season and found the course in fair condition. I would add it to an itinerary, though I would not plan a trip around it.

Best Booked as a Buyout

One more note worth making. COMO Le Beauvallon is an excellent option for a full buyout or a milestone celebration. Taking over all 42 suites this close to St Tropez makes a strong setup for a significant event, and because the property spent years as a private event venue, the team is well equipped to run one. A buyout also resolves the bar limitation, since you can set up service wherever you want when you control the space.

The takeaway from this COMO Le Beauvallon review is simple. This is a distinctive hotel and a welcome addition to the St Tropez market. It will not suit every traveler. It has real character and a clear point of view, and for the right couple it is one of the most interesting places to stay on this stretch of coast.

On Booking COMO Le Beauvallon

Coordinates Collective is a COMO Hotels preferred partner advisor. Booking COMO Le Beauvallon through us layers benefits on your room rate at parity with booking direct: daily breakfast for two, a room upgrade subject to availability, early check-in and late check-out subject to availability, and VIP recognition with the hotel team confirmed at booking and again before you travel.

Book a suite, not a room, and decide early between the open-plan Beauvallon Suite and the more traditional Junior Suite, since they read very differently in person. If you are planning a celebration, ask me about a full buyout before the calendar fills for peak summer.

If COMO Le Beauvallon is on your shortlist, reach out before booking direct. The rate is the same. The added benefits and the insider guidance are not.
